Pre Allignment check list .

Before going to rectify shafts missalignment you must be femilier of following checks.

• Toolbox meeting
• Tools arrangement
• Arrangements for machine rotation 
• Proper brackets for dial indicator 
• You must femilier with the bracket sag 
• Thermal grouth of machines
• Arrangements for lifting machines for adding or removal of shims
• Power isolation
• Lock outs of breakers or valves
• Removal of couppling covers or gaurds
• Couppling runouts
• Soft footing
• Mounting procedure of dial indicator
• Zero setting
• Rotate the shafts at 360 degree to check the zero for proper mounting of dial indicator
• Then Take the readings for allignment correction.

What is lubricant ?

Lubricant is a substance that helps to minimize friction between two sliding surfaces.
It also decrese the heat generation due to friction.
Lubricant can be oil grease or some solid like graphite.

What are causes of bearing failure ?

Bearing failure is the most common problem in machinery. There are manny factors that could case bearing failure.

• Not properly mounting of bearing.
• Mounting of bearing by heavy striking.
• Excess clearence of housing with bearing.
• More interfernce with shaft.
• Run out in shaft.
• Oval shaft diameter.
• Not proper axial clearence of hosing for thermal expension.
• Wrong type selection of bearing.
• Not proper lubrication.
• Dust in bearing housing.
• Not proper cooling of lubricant.
• Less amount of lubrication.
• Overloaded machine operation.
• Missallignment.

What is feeler gauge ?

Feeler gauge is a gauge consist of thin metallic strips used to meassure very thin gaps and clearences between parts.

Thikness of strips are marked on it.

What is kinetic and potential energy ?

Kinetic energy

The type of energy due to motion of the body is called kinetic energy.

KE = 1/2 mv²

Potential energy

The type of energy which is due to psition of the body is called potential energy.

Stored energy or compressed spring is also called the potential energy.

What is a bearing ?

Bearing is a machine element that facilitates rotational motion and avoids the motion in other direction with  deceresing the friction between two moving parts.

What is shaft allignment ?

Shaft allignment is a procedure to bring center lines of shafts (driver and driven) into one straight line.

There are two types of mis allignment

1. Redial
2. Axial (anguler)
